In
late August, UIC welcomed 2,021 freshmen. In order to give first-year
students a comprehensive experience of the university library and help
them understand the various resources and services available, a
three-day orientation was held on August 25th, 26th and 28th. 1,800
first-year students were divided into 194 MCP groups and each group was
given a tour by library staff, who provided detailed information about
the library's layout, services and facilities. 1,512 first-year students
participated in the satisfaction survey of the tour, and all of them
responded that they gained a lot from the tour, with a positive feedback
rate of over 95%.
Book Club Corner Activity
In the second half of 2021, we changed the Book Club Corner activity from one-on-one tutoring to a group sharing format.
The
library opened 6 time slots per week for students to sign up, with a
maximum of 10 students per slot. Tony, a teacher from the ELC, led the
students to share their reading experiences and discuss the topics in
the books, allowing them to practice their oral expression skills while
reading. Students with full attendance received a book as a reward at
the end of each Book Club Corner session. Let's see what the students
have to say about the activity!
I
participated in this activity for two consecutive periods, and I
enjoyed it very much. We would discuss some topics with ethical
significance according to the theme of the book. Sometimes we would
change the topic midway, but it was still interesting. I like this
activity so much and hope I have an opportunity to attend it again next
time!
Really
enjoy the atmosphere of Book Club! We sit in a circle, talking about
the books, or rather exchanging our ideas concerning certain topic of
the books. I respect and admire the collision of different views and
thoughts. And it is the collisions that spark new ideas.
Here I spent short but pleasant time with my friends and Tony! Anticipate for the next wonderful journey of Book Club~
I
am glad to attend the Book Club hold by LRC! During a month of Book
Club, I met the gentle and humorous teacher Tony and some seniors speak
good English, and I learned about different people's perceptions over
the same event and the differences between cultures. In this club, my
spoken English has been exercised, I also realize that my speaking needs
more practice to express my opinions better. My vocabulary has
increased by reading English books. Looking forward to the next book
club!
Book Fair &
E-Resources Discovery Day
In
2021, the Learning Resource Centre held three book fairs, displaying
over 16,000 books in Chinese and English from domestic and international
publishers. During these events, staff and students actively
participated, and selected about 9,500 books to be added to the library
collection. In addition, 165 readers shared their insights and
experiences about the book recommendations, and 58 of them were awarded
with gifts from the exhibitors.
On
May 14, the Learning Resource Centre held an E-resources Discovery Day,
and 10 well-known domestic and international database vendors were
invited to participate in the exhibition. The event was a good platform
for UICers to better understand and effectively utilize the library's
electronic resources.
In response to the national policy on energy conservation, the library implemented a series of energy conservation measures:
Reduce Indoor Lighting
Decorative lighting such as spotlights and downlights were turned off in the library.
Part
of the lighting in the library was turned off between 8:30-17:00 every
day. Students could borrow adjustable desk lamps from the Circulation
Desk if they needed them.
Shutting Off Some Elevators
Promote green living and take stairs more often.
Control Ambient Temperature and Humidity
Every
morning and afternoon, the librarians measure the temperature and
humidity in the library to ensure their stability to safeguard the
welfare of library collection and the comfort of library patrons.
Regular meetings were held with Hongcheng Purification and Haiyuan
Energy Conservation Company to analyze energy saving through past data.
UIC
is a liberal arts university, and the Whole Person Education Art Center
provides students with a rich and diverse art programme. In order to
encourage students' artistic creation and showcase their works, the
library collects a batch of outstanding students' artworks every year.
These paintings not only decorate the library, but also deepen the
connection between the library and the staff and students.
The
MET soundproof pods provide readers with a quiet language learning
environment where they can use the MET (More English Talkers) database
to practice spoken English. The soundproof pod is made of polymer
sound-insulating materials with multiple sound barriers. The air inside
is 100% refreshed every three minutes, and 4000K natural color lighting
is used to provide a quiet and comfortable environment so you don't have
to worry about affecting others when you practice your oral English.
Student Assistant Spotlight
The
library provided working opportunities for students to learn and
develop essential skills in customer service and communication. Student
assistants worked in the Circulation and Acquisition department after a
brief training. These students enjoyed the work and felt that they have
not only learned more about the library while working there, but also
learned time management and how to balance study and work, and witnessed
self-improvement.
Working
at the LRC allowed me to let go of my fast-paced studies for a while
and to organize books and help students who come in for advice in a very
quiet environment. The LRC feels like home to me, and I am truly
blessed to be able to work as a student assistant.
I
was in the library in different capacities, sometimes as a student
enjoying the resources and sometimes as a "porter" of the resources. I
worked with vision and enthusiasm, and I was involved in sanitizing and
circulating every book, which was something that meant a lot to me. I
did a small part in the operation of the library, and the library saw my
growth during college life. I will continue to be responsible for every
corner of the library and every book for the rest of my college years,
and I will work hard for the library that students "love" so much.
Working
in the library is a quiet and relaxing time every week for me, and it
is very rewarding to watch the carts full of books arrive neatly
arranged. During my year in the library, I have become more patient and
attentive. The quiet working environment of the library and the care of
the librarians have given me a lot of inspiration and help.
I
have always enjoyed the atmosphere of the library. A semester of work
gave me a deeper understanding of the library, and I was also amazed at
the speed of the university's collection and aquisition of new books.
The work of the aquisition department is not complicated, but requires
patience.
Although I'm always
putting on book labels, clearing my mind to focus on one thing has
helped me decompress. The librarians here are super gentle and carefully
explain the work that needs to be done and help me to solve problems
when I make mistakes.
