On Wednesday, December 6th 2017, sea of people consisting of UIC senior management, staff members and students began the book passing activity from old SHCV LRC to the new LRC. This memorable and meaningful event was the utmost importance for LRC, as it indicates the readiness and occupancy of the new LRC building.

The new LRC building has an area of 17,679 square meters which is three times larger than the current LRC. It provides 1,800 seats, including 200 computer workstations, an audio-visual room, group-study rooms, e-learning classroom, studio and an enriched e-reading experience. The new LRC will be innovative and modern by adapting to RFID intelligent bookshelves, a 24-hour book return station, RFID self-sorting return system and many more novel features. LRC strives to promote innovative and sustainable library service to empower UIC teaching, learning and research initiatives.

The event began at the old SHCV LRC with traditional lion dancing, and followed by an opening speech given by President Ng. After, President Ng commenced the first book which then was passed down the line of UICers and staffs in a hand by hand, book by book manner. Professor Zhang then led participants on this memorable journey to the new campus. The walk took approximately 35 minutes by foot and it stretched 3.5 kilometers from old SHCV LRC to the new LRC. UIC staff members directed the movement and cheered on the participants as they handed out small souvenirs and treats on their way.

While the book passing was in progress, on the new campus, staff members prepared the arrivals of over thousands of student and staffs whom participated. Once everyone arrived, President Ng placed the first book he handed out earlier on the shelf followed by a closing speech given by President Ng and Ms. Fung Ying Cham (Deputy College Librarian). After the speech, senior management, staff members and UICers continued placing books on the shelves. Everyone took part in the signing of the poster and photo opportunity.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to colleagues from SAO, WPEO, ECDO, SO, ACE, ITSC, HR, MPRO, PUR, MHEO, LRC; Student Academic Societies and UIC Executive Committee of Student Union for their effort in making this book passing activity a success. The concerted effort represents teachers and students coming together to uphold UIC’s tradition for many years to come.
