On Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018, the United International College held its New Campus Carnival. The afternoon began with the ‘Official Opening Ceremony of the new Learning Resource Centre.’ Distinguished guests from Zhuhai, Hong Kong, Sino-Foreign Cooperative University Libraries as well as parents, UIC staff members and students came together to celebrate this special moment. Guided tours were arranged for guests showcasing LRC’s new facilities, user-focused services, and resources.
After the arrival of all the guests, Deputy College Librarian Ms. Fung Cham gave her welcoming speech. Then, she introduced two student assistants from LRC, Ms. Wang Yao, 4th year Applied Translation Studies student and Mr. Yan Ruolin, 4th year Government and International Relations student. Both students shared their opinions on how the new LRC has met and exceeded their expectations and supported their studies throughout their time at United International College.
Next, the President of United International College, Professor Ng Ching-Fai applauded to the integration of new and emerging information technology at the LRC. Professor Ng states, “Our LRC is a “Learning” and “Resource” hub fit for the 21st century... In here, we establish connections: connections between students, connections between students and staff; connections with resources with an aim to facilitate the creation of new knowledge.”
Afterwards, Deputy Chairman of the HKBU Council and the Court, Mr. Andrew Yao, spoke about his admiration for Professor Ng’s leadership skills. Mr. Yao also shared with the audience how impressed he was by the development of the New Campus and students’ learning experience at UIC.
Soon after, President Ng Ching-Fai, Professor Zee Sze Yong, Professor Zhang Cong, Professor Lilian Kwan, Mr. Andrew Yao, Ms. Rosanna Choi, Mr. Nelson Chan and Ms. Fung Y. Cham were invited to the spacious welcoming entrance hall to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Lastly, the ceremony was concluded with a small orchestral performance organized by Dr. David Walters and Professor Mateja Marinkovic of the Division of Culture and Creativity in the Atrium. Everyone stood, surrounding the spiral staircase while enjoying the peaceful harmony which echoed throughout the newly opened library.
